This book was written to fill a gap. Despite a rapidly growing body of biochar science — thousands of peer-reviewed studies, multiple international standards bodies, and significant commercial adoption in several countries — no single comprehensive volume addressed all the dimensions that Indian farmers, policymakers, and researchers need to navigate: the agronomy of biochar fertilizers in Indian soil types, the economics of local production models, the regulatory pathways under Indian law, and the policy levers available to accelerate adoption at national scale.

The primary sources for this book are the author’s own published works, particularly Biocharculture (2014, MetaMeta Publications), the Biochar-Based Fertilizers preparation guide (2024), the Biochar Integrated Fertilizer Systems for Interior Semi-Arid India (2025), and Enabling Biochar for Climate-Resilient India (2025). These are supplemented by peer-reviewed literature from Lehmann, Woolf, Glaser, Liu, and many others; by Indian government policy documents; and by field data from multi-location trials conducted across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and other states.

The book is organized into nine parts. Part One establishes the crisis: the state of Indian soils, the consequences of chemical fertilizer dependence, and the economic and strategic vulnerabilities of an import-dependent fertilizer system. Part Two introduces biochar — its history, science, production technologies, and quality standards. Part Three covers biochar fertilizer formulations, inoculation protocols, the eight certified product types, and application methods. Part Four examines the relationship between biochar and soil fertility in depth. Part Five presents the circular economy framework for local biochar fertilizer production. Part Six analyses the fertilizer subsidy burden and how biochar can reduce it. Part Seven maps the government policy and regulatory architecture. Part Eight presents field evidence and case studies. Part Nine offers a forward-looking vision and specific recommendations.

The philosophy guiding the text throughout is consistent: biochar deployment should be a grassroots revolution with farmers as scientists, not a top-down or internationally dominated intervention. The 50:50 principle — fifty percent biochar combined with fifty percent organic amendment as the foundational ratio for all formulations — is the thread that runs through every practical chapter. This ratio, developed and validated through over two decades of Indian field trials by Dr N Sai Bhaskar Reddy, ensures that the structural capacity of biochar is always matched with sufficient organic matter to supply nutrients, microorganisms, and biological energy.
